10 push-ups a day: what they do every morning

Ten push-ups after you get up: a small reason to start your morning, even if you can’t do a single one yet.

10 push-ups a day: what they do every morning

10 push-ups a day won’t turn you into a bodybuilder, but they give your morning a reason to get going. Doing them every day works well for healthy people, takes about a minute, and works at a wall too. And if not a single one works yet today: you just start smaller.

Why nothing gets done in the morning

One video in the evening, then the next, the feed keeps playing on its own, and suddenly it’s past midnight. Then the alarm rings, your half-asleep hand dismisses it, and “five more minutes” turns into half an hour of snoozing. Snoozing feels like a gift, but it costs you exactly the minutes you could have had for yourself. That’s rarely down to you, often down to the evening before.

Nothing gets going in the morning without a trigger. With a groggy head you won’t win an argument with yourself, so you skip the argument entirely. Pick a fixed trigger instead of a resolution: “Push-ups first, then the feed.” People who make if-then plans like this reach their goals clearly more often, on average. The push-ups are that small trigger: they replace the argument with an action, before the phone gets its turn.

What 10 push-ups a day do

First, what feels good: you feel your shoulders, arms and core, and you’ve done something before the phone got its turn. A minute in which you count nothing but arms, breath and floor is a calm start to a day that otherwise gets loud right away. Many people also feel more awake afterwards, but the evidence for that is thin.

Over time, strength comes, especially if you haven’t done anything for a long while. In studies, small doses of strength training made untrained people measurably stronger, though only by a few percent. For exactly ten push-ups a day, nobody has measured it.

You won’t slim down or visibly bulk up from this in a few weeks; it’s too little for that.

A few push-ups aren’t a workout, they’re a reason to get going.

Wall, raised hands or knees

Can’t do a full push-up? Then start easier. These are real push-ups with less load. The higher your hands, the easier it gets. Find the level where ten go cleanly. Whatever you lean on has to stand firm and must not slide away:

  1. Wall: an arm’s length away, hands at chest height, lean your upper body toward the wall, push away.
  2. High edge: hands on a countertop or the back of a sofa, firm and non-slip.
  3. Knees: on all fours, hands slightly ahead of your shoulders, one line from knees to head.
  4. Low edge: hands on a sturdy sofa edge or bench.
  5. Full push-up: toes on the floor, body in one line.

How to do a clean push-up

Four things are enough:

  • Hands: just below shoulder height, fingers pointing forward.
  • Core: tighten it so your hips don’t sag.
  • Down and up: about two seconds down, until your elbows are at roughly a right angle, one second up. Breathe out as you push up.
  • Eyes: slightly ahead of your hands. Count out loud: if you can count, you’re not straining. Better seven clean ones than ten with sagging hips.

If your wrist twinges, try a folded towel under your hands, or a higher variation.

Push-ups every day or a break?

Ten easy push-ups every day are generally fine for healthy people, because the amount is small. That’s an assessment, not a study result. Rest days belong to training where you go almost to your limit: if you’re shaking after two sets of ten, you need tomorrow off; with ten easy ones, you don’t. If you haven’t done anything for a long time, start with the easiest level.

Burning muscles and shaking are fatigue. A stabbing pain in a joint, on one side only or getting worse with each repetition, is the stop signal: done for today.

Build up in small steps

Once a week, count how many clean repetitions you can do. Every one more than last week is progress.

If all ten were clean for several days in a row, take the next step: hands one level closer to the floor, or from knees to full. If it’s too hard, go back a week; that’s not a step backward.

On bad days: three instead of zero. It takes about two months on average until it feels automatic, often longer with exercise, and one skipped day changes little.

Your plan for tomorrow

Tonight: one minute. Clear the floor, charge your phone out of reach. A non-slip floor is enough, and so are your pajamas.

Tomorrow morning: sit on the edge of the bed, stand up slowly, then do the push-ups, and only after that the feed. No changing clothes, no trip anywhere, no excuse.

Overslept? Three slow ones at the wall in the hallway. That counts.

If you want an alarm to help

Wakea has push-ups as one of its three missions: the mission stops the alarm, and there is no snooze button. The camera counts the reps right on your device, and you set the difficulty per alarm. For the alarm to ring, notifications have to be allowed. And if something hurts, there is an emergency exit: that’s your cue to stop.

Frequently asked questions

What do 10 push-ups a day do?

A small start in strength for your arms, shoulders and core, a feel for your body in the morning and a habit that starts the same way every day. They won’t help you lose weight or visibly build up your chest.

Can you do push-ups every day, or do you need rest days?

With ten easy repetitions, yes, if you’re healthy. You need rest days as soon as it becomes real training, taken almost to your limit.

How do I start if I can’t do a single push-up?

At the wall, or with your hands on a firm edge. Find the level where ten go cleanly. If you can only do three, that’s your start.

What will I notice after 30 days of push-ups every day?

The morning first: you’ve already done something before the phone got its turn. The ten get easier over time. In the mirror you’ll see little; the habit often only sticks after two months.

Are 10 push-ups a day enough?

As a reason to get going and as a beginning, yes. For the physical activity guidelines, no: adults should strengthen all the major muscle groups on at least two days a week.

What if push-ups hurt my wrist or shoulder?

Choose a higher variation or put your hands on a towel. Stabbing pain is a stop signal: stop for today. If it lasts several days, have it checked by a doctor.
